BOTOX

Botilinum toxin is  secreted by a bacteria named Clostridium botilinum.  This bacteria was first defined in Belgium in the late 1800s. Botox is the trade name for the purified form of this toxin.

Toxin used by opthamologists in the treatment of strabismus, was also used in cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, and limb spasms by neurologists and physical therapy specialists.

By 2002, FDA approved it's use in fine facial wrinkles in U.S.A. It was approved for increased sweating (hyperhidrosis) in 2004.

Botox, as most people think, is not only an anti-wrinkle remedy, but a proven drug that has been used for many years in the treatment of many diseases.

Although the treatment of wrinkle relaxing is the most mediatic application area, other indications  are;

  • Migraine,

  • Excessive sweating,

  • xcessive teeth grinding (Bruxism),

  • Achalasia,

  • Tremor,

  • Muscle spasticity

Mechanism of action is by disrupting the transmission between the nerve and the muscle. The effect is not permanent - it resolves by time.

Botilinum toxin is extremely sensitive to external factors exteranl factors. Temperatures higher than +4 degrees decrease the effect of the drug,  so cold should not be broken. The drug should also be used shortly after dilution with physiological saline solution. The toxin is so sensitive that  pressurized serum exsposure while diluting and even shaking it vigorously may reduces efficacy.

As stated before, "Botox" is a trademark produced by the Allergan company. Only Dysport and Botox are legally available in Turkey. Although clinical applications are very similar, they are two different subtypes of botilinum neurotoxin.
