Postoperative Period

At the end of the operation, a corset, bandage or compression garment suitable for the region will be used. These help to control swelling and redrape the skin.

Hospital stay is not required after liposuction. Patients are discharged at the same day, usually after a couple of hours. Hospitalization is required for high volume liposuction (often more than 5 liters, or more than 10% of body weight). Hospital stay is directly correlated with the aspirated fat volume.

Orally taken standard painkillers are used for pain relief. This pain is usually described as discomfort, burn or stinging sensation by the majority of my patients. These symtoms generally subsides in 3-5 days.

Drains are generally reserved for large volume or 4D liposuctions. Drainage for 1-3 days, from the cannula entry holes is normal unless drains are used. Oozing  ceases at the 3rd or 4th day. During this period, mattress protectors are useful at home. Post-operative showering is postponed till this oozing stops.

The pressure garments or bandages will be used for 2 - 4 weeks. Bed time only usage of them may be extended for 1-2 weeks depending on recovery of the swelling of each individual. Manual or device assisted lymphatic drainage is recommended to accelerate healing, generally starting at 2nd or 3rd week.

Reurn to daily routine is within a week - usually in 4 or 5 days. Heavy physical activity is prohibited for 4 weeks.
